Reaction – Jamestown

As I’ve mentioned In previous articles, my overlong commute and my impending nuptuals have been weighing heavily on my free gaming time. As such, I’ve been looking for games that are shorter-subject; games that I can pick up for a small  amount of time, get my fill of fun, and be back out with minimal overarching commitment.  As much as I love the genre, RPGs are a style of game that’s a bit lost to me at the moment, as sometimes it will be weeks between play sessions of a particular game, and with my completely absymal short term memory, following a 25-hour plot just isn’t in the cards at the moment.  Fortunately, there’s one genre that has never failed me In this particular goal: the “shmup”.

Shoot ‘em ups, or “shmups”, as they’re more commonly termed, allow the player a lot of freedom in the way users play them; they boast simple mechanics and level designs, and limited lengths of play.  Given that almost all shmups are rooted in arcade cabinets, most are only about 5-6 levels long, and even playing through an entire game from start to finish usually takes less than an hour.  However, despite their simple trappings, a lot of shmups belie a curious depth, and in that regard, Final Form Games’ Jamestown is no exception.

Otakon 2009: The Game Room

The great thing about the game room at Otakon is that there is pretty much something for everyone.  Fighting Games, Rhythm Games, FPSes, Shmups, Puzzle Games… if you can’t find at least one thing you are more than happy to sit down and play, then you aren’t trying very hard.
